So now that New York, London, Milan, and Paris fashion week has come to an end let’s have a look at what the 2019 spring/summer collections have got to offer for us in terms of trends for next year. The runways were definitely filled with animal print and leather, something which is usually a fall/winter tendency, but this time we can see them combined with light, flowy, feminine textures in pastel or earth tones. There were also a lot of military and utility wear inspired looks, oh and pockets, lots of pockets! 🙂 I’ve chosen a favourite show from each fashion capital, here they are:
New York Fashion Week – Tom Ford Spring 2019 ready-to-wear
“I became a designer, because I wanted to make men and women feel more beautiful and to empower them with a feeling of confidence. A feeling of knowing that they looked their best and could then present their best selves to the world. I wanted to make clothes that were flattering. That make one look taller and slimmer and more beautiful or more handsome” says Tom Ford after his runway show, and indeed, his was one of the few collections this year where the focus was on classical elegance and feminine silhouettes rather than following or creating a certain trend.
He also added: “I feel that fashion has somehow lost its way a bit, and it is easy for all of us to be swept up in trends that have lost touch with what women and men want to actually wear.”

London Fashion Week – Burberry Spring 2019 ready-to-wear
This was Riccardo Tisci’s first collection as new creative director of Burberry and he named it Kingdom: “It’s like a patchwork or a mix of the British lifestyle.” It’s interesting to notice that his aim seems to have been very similar to Tom Ford’s: to bring simplicity, elegance and femininity back. After the fashion show he talked about seeing a need for “sophistication. I know we all talk about street, and I was one of the first, but,” he said, “we forget about sophisticated cut and Savile Row tailoring.” Ok but let’s admit it, he didn’t have a very difficult job, as Burberry’s signature trench coats have always been and will always be iconic.
Milan Fashion Week – Fendi Spring 2019 ready-to-wear
And this is the part when we get to the pockets. Leather pockets. Pockets upon pockets. Pockets on belts. Anything you can imagine. Don’t forget that the Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana shows are also held at Milan fashion week, so I had a really difficult time picking a favourite, but Fendi’s latest collection is definitely the winner this year. The runway looks were inspired by utility and military wear, but without loosing their femininity or elegance to any extent. There’s a bit of the lately super popular athleisure trend in there as well, but even those leggings- or shorts-outfits that I would normally hate were put together in such a stylish and sophisticated way. Similar to Tom Ford and Burberry, leather is a key element in the Fendi collection as well.
Paris Fashion Week – Chanel Spring 2019 ready-to-wear
And we’ve moved on from Milan to Paris, but it seems the pockets remain. Not that this would be something unusual from Chanel. Another similarity with Fendi is that the logo game is definitely going strong. It’s not necessarily the collection I fell in love with this year, but rather the atmosphere of the show. The looks were what Karl Lagerfeld brings us every season: feminine tweed suits, ladylike dresses, quilted chain bags and lots of great accessories. He never disappoints. But the location was even more mesmerizing than in any of the previous years, the interior of the Grand Palais having been transformed into a sandy beach with real waves, to ensure the ultimate holiday feeling. I mean…what’s next Chanel…??? 🙂
