Fall is here, and I’ve probably already mentioned this a thousand times here on the blog, but this is the best time for layering! When in the mornings or evenings its chilly, but then during the day it can be as hot as in summer…! And when we’re speaking of layering, I’m not talking about wearing a thick cover-it-all cardigan over everything and hoping it will keep you warm. Not only. But nowadays there is serious methodology in the new and fashionable kind of layering, which involves combining breathable, yet isolating fabrics that have been designed to be slipped over, under – or sometimes both, depending how the mood takes you – other similarly versatile pieces.
And what is great about it? Apart from the fact that we’re never too cold or too warm…? Layering means you can wear clothes previously classified as seasonal all year long. Skirts over trousers, T-shirts under dresses, a shirt on top of a turtleneck, blazers, kimonos, and trench coats galore. All you need is a bit of creativity to turn your wardrobe into a neverending one.
I’m pretty sure you’ve also been in the situation when you went for a holiday abroad and when you got there you realized the whether is not quite like you had expected. So you basically put everything you find in your suitcase on at the same time, to prevent you from being cold. And then the next day, you wear the same layers, just in a different order, cause who wants to end up wearing the same thing on all the holiday pics, right…? I bet that sounds familiar to everyone! 🙂 Well to be honest layering is the same thing on a day-to-day level. The only difference is that it’s not a necessity, but rather something you can achieve by being creative and following your personal style.
It would be quite difficult to try and trace down the roots of layering, cause if we take into consideration the history of fashion, the term has probably been around for the past 30 centuries. But since it’s fashion week, let’s have a look at some great examples from the international runways!
This year one of my favorites was definitely May Mara, their latest Spring/Summer 2019 collection was presented at the Milan Fashion Week a couple of days ago. Their layering this season is classic, feminine, elegant, and what else would you hope for…?
My other big favorite is Ermanno Scervino, not only this year, basically every year! I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this name quite a couple of times on the blog already, as I usually include him in my fashion week related recap. He loves playing with thicker and stiffer fabrics, like leather and combine them with lighter, flowy textures like tulle or lace. This genius game he plays is well visible in the latest Spring/Summer 2019 collection, but last season’s SS collection was also pretty breathtaking.
